Senator Prof Datuk Dr Ismail Md Salleh who died while travelling on a China-Singapore flight today was a special icon.
His sudden death is a big loss to the nation which he served as academician, economist, thinker and maulidur rasul figure.
Ismail, 61, was confirmed dead on arrival at Singapore General Hospital at 8am. He leaves wife Datin Hasnah Wahab and six children.
His untiring efforts in fighting for the cause of the disabled (OKU) was rewarded when he became the first such person to be appointed a member of Dewan Negara in Dec 2007.
Being blind at the age of 13 did not stop Ismail from receiving a Bachelor's degree in Economy and Political Science from New York University in 1973 and a Master's degree and Phd in economy from University of Illinois in 1974 and 1977.
Starting as an economic lecturer in the Economic Analyst and Public Policy Department in the Economic Faculty of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Ismail rose to become its department head in 1981.
Born in Pasir Mas, Kelantan on Sept 2, 1947, Ismail had been an academician his entire life, having held various posts including that as Vice Chancellor of Universiti Kolej Antarabangsa Teknologi Twintech (IUCTT) and president of the National Association of Bumiputera Private Colleges.
Posts held in economy include deputy director-general of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS), executive deputy director of the Economic Service and Research Centre of the Malaysian Business Centre and member of the National Economic Consultative Council (NECC II) - Community Restructuring Committee.
Ismail who was active in helping the blind was president of the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) in 2007 and chairman of the South-east Asia International Council for the Education of the Blind in 1999.
He had fought to increase the disabled access to infrastructure which still lagged behind developed countries.
In sports, Ismail was Malaysian contingent chief for the Far East and South Pacific (Fespic) Games for the Disabled in Kuala Lumpur in 2006.
In 2001, Ismail was awarded a Phd in literature by the Irish International University by the European Union in recognition of his services to the country and international community.
